Neves was raised an FC Porto fan and joined the club’s youth programme at the age of eight. Neves was born in Mozelos (Santa Maria da Feira), in the Aveiro District. He spent a season on loan at Padroense, the academy’s under-16 team, during his time there. Luis Castro, manager of the reserve team, praised him for having “extraordinary mental qualities, to go along with technical and tactical skills” during his time in the youth structures. Neves was planned to skip Porto’s under-19s and play with the reserves instead before the 2014–15 season.
